A Few Days Away

Feeling puffed out with working every day, I decided to take the missus away for a break last week to relax and unwind.

After ruling out Hua Hin, Cha-am, Pattaya and a dozen other places it was decided we’d take the bus and boat to Koh Samet for four days.

The bus from Ekkamai down to Rayong takes about 4 hours depending on traffic and cost a couple of hundred baht for a return ticket. The 40 minute ferry ride over to the island is cheap as chips too and not going to break the bank.

Accommodation costs whatever you want to spend, be it 500 baht or 50,000 baht a night. We picked up a discount deal on Agoda and paid just under 5k for three nights in a nice place on the beach in the northern part of the island.

Getting about is easy with plenty of green songthaews running up and down the roads to all the beaches. There’s also the option of renting a scooter for 300 baht a day or a golf buggy for 800 baht if you don’t fancy a bike.

If you’re a beach bum you’ll love the place.

For someone like myself who isn’t into sitting on a deckchair for hours on end or going for long walks in the blazing sun, there wasn’t much to keep me busy and I was more than happy to be heading back to Bangkok on Friday morning having spent most of the week just sleeping.

Koh Samet is definitely a place for those who enjoy sitting on the sand or splashing in the sea all day long.

Would I recommend it? Sure, it’s worth a visit for a few days away but I won’t be in a hurry to go back anytime soon.
